Locals of Langathel village in Thoubal district on Sunday demanded the trucks carrying earth for the brick farms at Wangjing Tentha to stop moving across the Langathel region and also halted the moving trucks.
The Kangleipak Apunba Lamjing Lup Langathel and Iron Team Langathel representatives blocked the moving of trucks carrying earth from the paddy fields to the brick farms at Wangjing Tentha, from passing the Langathel region, stating that the moving of the trucks has worsened the condition of the road and causing respiratory illness to the locals nearby as well.
Kangleipak Apunba Lamjing Lup Langathel secretary P Lenil claimed that although the state government had taken up various steps to conserve the paddy lands with various schemes and programmes, including the Manipur Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act 2014, the excavation of earth from the paddy fields by the trucks from brick farms are deteriorating the health of the cultivation lands.
“For years, Langathel had been able to produce and export surplus quantities of vegetables including bottle gourd, pumpkin and watermelon to other states, but the recent year's harvest had been disappointing owing to the deteriorated condition of the cultivation soil,” he said. He also drew the immediate attention of CM N Biren, the Agriculture minister and the authorities concerned in this regard.
