Vexed over the delay and negligence in repairing culverts along the Imphal-Jiribam highway in Langjing Achouba area in Imphal West, locals on Wednesday blocked the national highway.
The road block protest was lifted following the assurance of Patsoi MLA, S Kunjakeshwor, to cancel the contract of the agency who took up the job if they failed to finish the work within five days.
As a consequence of the protest, all vehicles plying along the highway remained stranded for a few hours.
The Langjing Achouba Maning Leikai Meira Paibi Lup also served an ultimatum of 15 days to the authority concerned to complete the repairing of the two culverts in that specific area.
Failure to complete the repairing of the culvert within the stipulated time will trigger the locals to block the national highway once again, said member of the association Khangjarakpam Bilashini while speaking to the media.
She said two big holes have been dug up at the highway since the last five-six months for repairing culverts but the work is yet to be completed.
The locals do not mind taking time in the blacktopping works, however the hole dug up for repairing culverts have become a great source of inconvenience and danger to the commuters, especially the locals, she said, stressing the urgent need to complete the culvert repair soon.
