Highlighting an important role of local self government both in hill and valley of Manipur, professor Chinglen Meisnam of economic department, Manipur University (MU) said "No election, no fund from centre. And as long as election is pending, there will be no development".
However, even if the election is conducted and the power of local self government is limited, it will also affect the state's development, the professor during a discussion programme on election of local self government and it's importance on Monday at Manipur Press Club; it was organised by All Manipur Nupi Marup.
Local self-governance is important for a state's development, said professor Chinglen, adding that every representative from rural, urban and the hills who work at the grass root level knows where development is needed and where the shortage is.
Giving an example of MGNREGS fund from the centre, the professor highlighted the fund amount different from other neighbouring states and also. He added that less amount of funding amid the ongoing conflict has caused more hardship to the people.
He said good governance can come when local self government works properly and called for issuance of notification of pending election which comes under state election commission.
President of All Manipur Nupi Marup, Th Shakhi Devi said that as no Panchayat, municipality and ADC elections have been held, various works for locality development, gram sabha to discuss matters, labour budget, etc. have failed.
