Kukis in Kamjong district declare support to ‘War on Drugs’

The Kuki people in and around Maokot village in Kamjong district resolved to drop poppy cultivation and sought government attention in arranging alternative livelihood for them.

The Kuki people in and around Maokot village in Kamjong district decided to drop poppy cultivation and declare support to the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign, with the initiative of the Eastern Kuki Chiefs’ Association and KSO Kamjong.

The Eastern Kuki Chiefs’ Association and KSO Kamjong organised a meeting on the alternative livelihoods for people in the poppy cultivation area at Maokot village under Sahamphung Block in Kamjong district in two sessions.

The first session on Friday night was solely organised for the village authorities while the second session on Saturday was attended by the public.

After threadbare discussions in the two sessions, the people of the area in line with the government’s ‘War on Drugs’ campaign, resolved to drop poppy cultivation and sought government attention in arranging alternative livelihood for them.

The general public also expressed gratitude to the Eastern Kuki Chiefs’ Association and KSO Kamjong for the initiative.
