The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) in Manipur on Thursday demanded strong action against police commandos, who allegedly assaulted the general secretary of KSO Sadar Hills at Kalapahar in Kangpokpi district on Thursday.

The KSO warned that if the authorities concerned failed to take action within the stipulated time it will face the music of infuriated people in the hills.

Speaking to the media, the general secretary of KSO Sadar Hills, Thangtinlen Haokip said that the incident occurred at 1 pm, March 3, while he was returning home after monitoring the construction of the KSO Sadar Hills administrative office building situated at Kalapahar.

“I saw security personnel stopping vehicles and inquired about it, to which they responded that frisking was being done. They asked me to open the back door of my vehicle to which I politely opened and told them to do their duty... When I disclosed my identity as the general secretary of KSO Sadar Hills, the commando personnel started assaulting me without any reason,” Haokip said.

According to the medical report, Haokip suffered a ruptured eardrum owing to slapping.

K Songreng, spokesperson of KSO Sadar Hills, during a press meet at Kangpokpi on Thursday afternoon at KSO Sadar Hills office said that even if the chief minister made a tall claim of law and order improvement in the state, people of Kangpokpi district are still gripped by fear when they see security forces.

The KSO Sadar Hills condemned the assault of its general secretary Thangtinlen Haokip by Manipur police commando led by additional SP, Imphal West for no reason at Kalapahar, he said.

It questioned the presence of police commandos in their jurisdiction in the hill district of Kangpokpi while questioning the district police’s capability in dealing with the law and order situation of the district, he said.

It also warned that the district police will also be charged with the same accountability in connection with the presence and high-handedness of the police commandos in Kangpokpi district if they [the police commandos] are not removed from the district at the earliest.
