The Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) on Saturday alleged that Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam threatened the lup’s general secretary over the recent exposures about non-functioning and controversies relating to Khelo India programme in Manipur.

Addressing the conference on Saturday at KKL office located at Jupiter Yambem Centre, Paona Bazar, KKL general secretary Ngamkheingakpa Luwang said that the sports minister threatened him on October 24 through phone.

Instead of answering the question raised by KKL, the minister rebuked him and justified the action of selection of two coaches of the Khelo India programme, Ngamkheingakpa Luwang said. The first pertained to the selection of S Suresh Singh who had participated in an invitational level boxing tourney by passing Tongbram Premi Devi of Phubala who had participated in two national boxing tournaments and had also obtained a post graduate diploma in coaching for boxing from Singhania University in Rajasthan and also recognised by the University Grants Commission.

Regarding that, the minister had replied that he had selected him because he knows him personally, making the selection committee a joke, the KKL general secretary alleged. It was also pointed out earlier that Suresh had not appeared for the interview on June 12, 2022 but was invited for an interview the next day without any new notification. The KKL contention is that the second interview was illegal, held with mala fide intention, he added.

Luwang further stated that KKL questioned the selection of Rowing coach for Bishnupur district and added that it is being reiterated here one again that the person selected as the rowing coach was a person qualified in Canoeing and Kayaking and not Rowing. It is akin to appointing a football player as a hockey coach. The question has yet to be answered till date, but the minister stated that he had earlier selected the boxing coach by himself feigning ignorance on the matter, said Luwang.

Luwang further said that the third point was of the inefficiency of YAS director T Phullen Meitei on non-implementation of scheme for Centre of Excellence under the Khelo India programme in Manipur till date.
Luwang mentioned that the notification to the scheme effect was issued by the Regional Director of Khelo India, Rajinder Singh, as early as June 18, 2020 for eight states including Manipur of which Manipur is yet to implement the scheme. The programme had ensured a flow of Rs 1.25 crores for the first year but it is yet to be utilised for Manipur, he asserted.

“It is a matter of great shame that for the first time in the history of sports in Manipur, the director of YAS, Manipur had to resort to mustering up a few faithful employees of his directorate to come out and put a publish display of strength stating that he should not be remove”, the secretary general said.

He asked the sports coaches and officials who participated in the public display of strength if they simply agree with the director’s misdeeds.

KKL drew the attention of the chief minister to intervene into the matter and save the future of sports of Manipur by removing YAS director and calling for fresh selection of coaches for Khelo India.
