In a bid to ensure the strict implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Manipur, the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS), Manipur, on Saturday has called for steadfast government support.
Following the Friday’s uncovering of a large-scale ILP scam by the government, the JCILPS commended these efforts and pledged its own support to further the cause.
Addressing the media at their office in Imphal, Thiyam Saratchandra, the convenor of JCILPS, highlighted the past enforcement drives conducted by the committee to uphold the ILP regulations. He noted the challenges faced by JCILPS volunteers, citing resistance from certain lawmakers and officials allegedly linked to influential figures in the business community, particularly in the Bazar area.
“The presence of high-profile individuals influencing the ILP issuance process has led to significant irregularities,” he emphasised, lamenting the lack of adherence to follow the ILP guidelines aimed at safeguarding indigenous interests.
Furthermore, Saratchandra raised concerns over malfunctioning ILP booths in Jiribam and at Khongsang Railway Station, previously identified during JCILPS inspections months ago. He highlighted the need for these operational lapses to be promptly addressed.
To strengthen the enforcement of ILP regulations, JCILPS called for enhanced collaboration between their committee and the government.
The JCILPS also urged holders of fake ILP cards to voluntarily surrender them before the committee or the government to avoid potential legal consequences.
In conclusion, Saratchandra reiterated JCILPS’s commitment to ensuring the effective implementation of ILP in Manipur, urging all stakeholders to prioritise compliance with regulations for the collective benefit and future security of the state’s indigenous communities.
