Decrying the Amra Bengali for filing a complaint in the Supreme Court to withdraw the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system from Manipur, the students’ wing of Joint Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) torched an effigy of Amra Bengali at Mantripukhri, Imphal East on Tuesday.

Convenor of JCILPS, students’ wing Haobijam Chalamba Meitei told the media on the sidelines of the protest that the students’ wing strongly condemned Amra Bengali for filing a complaint in the Supreme Court with the demand to withdraw the ILP system from Manipur.

The ILPS implementation came into effect in the state after years of demand by the people of Manipur, he said. While the people are celebrating the implementation of ILP in Manipur by the Central government, filing a complaint with the demand to withdraw the ILP system from Manipur is unfortunate, he added.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh had assured earlier that no one can withdraw the ILP system from the state and the state leaders should also support his statement in order to protect the indigenous people’s right of Manipur, he said.

Acting on its vested interest and to gain political mileage, Amra Bengali filed the complaint in the Supreme Court and it must be withdrawn immediately, he added.

As the protesters torched the effigy, police personnel snatched it and extinguished the fire by throwing it into a nearby community pond.
