Thawai Mirel on Friday strongly condemned the alleged heavy handed security measures of the Jat Regiment against women folk at Sabungkhok Khunou on Thursday.
Disappointed over repeated incidents of assault allegedly carried out by central security forces, Thawai Mirel and its women’s wing called on the Manipur governor to apprise her about the matter.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Thawai Mirel convenor Thokchom Sujata informed that the team had demanded the governor to suspend the Jat Regiment personnel involved in the incident.
“We also demanded the governor to initiate investigation into cases of violence and assault by central security forces against women and students in recent protests and suspend the personnel involved in the cases,” she said.
She also highlighted that the team had put forth several demands to the governor including swift retrieval of the two student bodies.
“We also urged the governor to visit Phougakchao Ikhai and assess the ground situation first-hand,” she said. She further informed that the governor had assured to look into the matter swiftly but cautioned that mass upheaval from Meitei women folk would be inevitable if the governor failed to deliver her assurances.
