International Day of World’s Indigenous People held

Many outsiders have started copying the indigenous people and are challenging the integrity of the state and trying to create hatred among different communities, IPAK president Ksh Somorendro said.

The International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples was observed on Tuesday at Manipur Press Club, Imphal by the Indigenous People’s Association of Kangleipak (IPAK) under the motto, “Save Indigenous People”.

Speaking on the occasion, IPAK president Ksh Somorendro pointed out that Manipur has become a destination for many outsiders, including foreigners thereby giving a great threat to the demographic of Manipur.

He said that many outsiders have started copying the indigenous people and are challenging the integrity of the state and trying to create hatred among different communities.

Considering all the facts, there is an urgent need to strengthen the ILP system and take up steps to pick out the foreigners who are imitating as indigenous people, he added.

The president lastly called upon all the indigenous people of Manipur for unity and apprised them to support one another for moving towards development.  

The function was also attended by founder convenor of JCILPS Sapamcha Jadumani; former convenor JCILPS H Ibotombi Khuman; president of PANDM Yumnamcha Dilipkumar; PPCM convenor M Bishwshwor; UCM president Joychandra Konthoujam; IPSA president T Birjit and ACOM-Lup president Sanjit Soraisam as presidium members.

The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was also observed jointly by Kabui Union, Manipur; All Manipur Kabui Women's Organisation (AMKWO); All Manipur Kabui Students' Union and Kabui Customary Council at the Kabui Union office in Imphal. 

Indigenous people are inheritors and preservers of ancestral cultures, propagation of traditional knowledge on health and traditional medicines, handicraft and protector environment, said a release issued by joint secretary of Kabui Union, Manipur, K Athoi Kabui.

During the observance, general secretary of AMKWO, Achungpuilu, pressed her view that women are the backbone of the society from a very early civilisation and stated that Kabui females must come with their innate quality and traditional skills. 

President of Kabui Customary Council, K Gangmumel Kabui, also stressed the need to preserve and promote the aged long traditional customs not to blow away Kabui's customs by the newly conceptualised and other culture or faith, as per the release.

According to the press release, the president of Kabui Union, Manipur, K Heera Kabui, pointed out that the today’s situation of Kabui is pathetic and said, “as one of the indigenous communities of Manipur, we are easily mesmerised by the new system of faiths, which do not belong to our ancestors. We are putting ourselves in the wrong shoes. Kabui is losing in every sphere like traditional festivals, customary rituals, literature, ancestral faith, costumes and others”. 

He called for placing grievances before the concerned forums or government to protect the rights given by UNO and the Constitution of India for which the Kabui have to stand united, it added.
