In a first in Manipur, a team of doctors performed kidney transplant successfully on three patients at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Hospital in Imphal on Sunday.

It is for the first time that kidney transplant operation was done in a government-run hospital in the state and the second in the entire Northeast India after Guwahati Medical College, Assam.

Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren on Sunday visited the recovering patients at the hospital and lauded the doctors, nurses and medical staff involved in the operations in achieving the milestone.

Interacting with media persons on the sidelines of his visit to the hospital, the chief minister announced that the entire team of the doctors, nurses and medical staff involved in the successful kidney transplants will be awarded with Rs 5 lakh in recognition and appreciation of their efforts.

"A team of doctors at JNIMS have successfully conducted 3 Kidney Transplant operations. In recognition of their achievement, I have announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh. Also, it gives me immense delight to share that all 3 patients are beneficiaries of #AyushmanBharat," the chief minister also tweeted along with a video clip of it.

Biren further pointed out that people of the state, especially the poorer sections of the society, face a lot of economic hardships when their family members and relatives need kidney transplants or dialysis.

Considering all these factors, the state BJP government 2.0 has been putting efforts for patients to avail the facilities for kidney transplantation and dialysis in the state, Biren said.

According to JNIMS director, professor L Deben, the recipients are Takhellambam Bikramjit Singh, 37, of Wangoo Tera, Kakching; Kimsary, 41, of Tuisonjang Village, Churachandpur and Hanso Wungleng, 32 of Winitang, Ukhrul.

Dr Deben said that no untoward incident occurred after the completion of the operations and all the three operations may be treated as successfully performed.
