Imphal to have multi-level parking, rotary parking system

The Imphal Smart City mission is progressing full swing, said MAHUD Minister Y Khemchand, who planted saplings at Kangla Nongpok Torban as a part of Greener Imphal City Campaign.

Plans have been finalised to introduce a rotary parking system in four specific areas and multi-level car parks in two specific areas of Imphal City to reduce parking congestion, MAHUD Minister Y Khemchand said on Saturday.

He was speaking to the media during a Greener Imphal City Campaign ‘Planning towards greener, cleaner Imphal’ organised as a part of the “Saat Varsh Harsh-100 Smart Cities (7th Anniversary of Smart Cities Mission)” at Kangla Nongpok Torban, Imphal West.

Informing that the scheme is almost in the tendering stage under the Imphal Smart City project, the minister said that the Imphal Smart City mission is progressing full swing.

The Union government launched its flagship Smart Cities Mission on June 25, 2015 for comprehensive development of physical, institutional, social and economic infrastructure to meet the increasing demands of the growing urbanisation. Imphal City was one of the 100 cities selected for the mission.

CEO of Imphal Smart City Limited Harikumar Thingbaijam elaborated that the rotary parking system will be installed besides the Kangla Nongpok Torban, Ima Keithel Temporary Market, Naga Mapal, and Secured Building. Each of the parking lot will have the capacity to load 70 four-wheelers and 40 two-wheelers, he added.

The multi-level car parks will be installed at the Keishampat Old Power House and at PWD’s Quarters, Kanglapat, he said, adding that the parks will have a capacity of 400 four-wheelers and 150 four wheelers respectively.

He said the first phase of the Imphal Smart City project will be completed by June 2023, except for the construction of the Integrated Command and Control Centre building which is targeted to be completed by December 2023.

As a part of the campaign, saplings were planted at the Kangla Nongpok Torban by the minister, officials and staff and students of Bhairodan Maxwell Primary and High School, Imphal. The sapling plantation drive will continue in different parts of Imphal City for the next seven days, as per officials.
