Imphal East: Arms and ammunition used in Andro clash recovered

Superintendent of Police, Imphal East N Herojit told reporters in Imphal that the items were recovered from Andro Chingthak during a search operation.

Arms and ammunition and other items suspected to have been used in the recent clash that took place at Andro in Imphal East have been recovered by the Imphal East commando team on Monday, sources said.

Superintendent of Police, Imphal East N Herojit told reporters in Imphal that the items were recovered from Andro Chingthak during a search operation. The search operation was conducted in the area of Maringthel and its surroundings by the district commando team at about 9.35 am on Monday.

A combined team of district commando under the supervision of additional superintendent of police (Ops), Roni Mayengbam led by officer-in-charge, district commando unit along with a column of 16 Assam Rifles conducted mobile frisking and checking, including cordon and search operation in different areas of Andro, Herojit said. He said the police activities have been continuing since there were frequent reports of gunfire at night.

In the continuation of the police activity, the combined team detected one transparent polythene bag at Andro Chingthak inside a bush. During examination of the bag contained, one improvised AK rifle with magazine; two 9mm pistol with magazine both marked as ‘Made in Japan’; two wireless set marked as ‘BAOFENG’; 15 live ammunitions of AK rifle; 21 live ammunitions of 9mm; 18 empty detonators and 15 empty cases of assorted ammunitions, he added.

The recovered arms and ammunition along with other items were seized by observing due formalities, he said, adding that the empty cases are suspected to be used recently. However, no persons have been arrested in connection with the recovered items yet, he said.

At least six persons were injured in the clash that broke out between two groups belonging to rival candidates of Andro Assembly Constituency on October 11.
