IFP photo journalist wins 3rd place in World Environment Day photo contest

The first best entry title was won by Khangembam Alevason Meitei of Iroishemba Mayai Leikai while Sanasam Okendro Singh of Thoubal Sabaltongba Mayai Leikai won second best entry.

Imphal Free Press photo journalist Yumkhaibam Stephen Luwang of Uripok Polem Leikai in Imphal West has won third best entry in 5th June World Environment Day, 2024 photo contest cum exhibition.

The contest cum exhibition was organised by Manipur Amateur Photo Club (MAPC) in partnership with Directorate of Environment and Climate change, Government of Manipur at Imphal Art Gallery, Kwakeithel, Imphal on Friday.

The photo exhibition cum prize- money photography competition was organised to commemorate World Environment Day, 2024 and Imphal’s new state-of-the-art, Imphal Art Gallery, Kwakeithel, Imphal was also inaugurated by the dignitaries of the function.

The function was to be held on June 5, the day earmarked for World Environment Day, but because of the emergency of the flash floods in Imphal, it had to be postponed to June 14. The exhibition will carry on till June 18.

The competition was conducted on three different themes of this year’s World Environment Day; “Land Restoration, Desertification, Drought Resilience”.

It is said that because of the flood emergency, entries of competitors for the competition was limited to 19. However, MAPC members were barred from the competition section and the photos they submitted are placed in the non-competitive section of the exhibition.

The first best entry title was won by Khangembam Alevason Meitei of Iroishemba Mayai Leikai while Sanasam Okendro Singh of Thoubal Sabaltongba Mayai Leikai won second best entry.

Alevason won as first best entry with a landscape photograph taken at Chadong with a caption ‘Nature Rebounds’.

Okendro, the second best entry, won the prize with his photo taken at Ningthi village road, Kamjong district with a caption ‘Afforestation or Deforestation: Which one is better for environment and human? A Photo on the way to Ningthi village, Kamjong district”.

The third best entry, Stephen won the prize with a photo taken at Pukhao showing a cow grazing at a paddy field with a caption ‘Cow feeding in a dried up paddy field”.

The three winners were handed over cash prize of Rs 15,000; Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,000 respectively along with a citation each.

Director Department of Environment and Climate Change, Tourangbam Brajakumar Singh and president of Manipur Amateur Photo Club, Pradip Phanjoubam attended the function as chief guest and president respectively.
