IFP IMPACT: Manipur government to act on Sangai University scam

Reacting to an exclusive report by the 'Imphal Free Press' on the 'Sangai International University scam', the Manipur government has assured to take action against the guilty.

The Manipur government, reacting to an exclusive report by the Imphal Free Press on the Sangai International University scam, has assured to take action against the concerned university authorities if found guilty.

Speaking to the Imphal Free Press on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of Manipur University Week 2023 on Saturday at the Manipur University, state Education Minister Thounaojam BasantaKumar said, "The state government will take appropriate action against the university authorities if they are found guilty".

Since the scam story of Sangai International University in Churachandpur district, Manipur has been published in the media, the government will follow suit and closely examine the incident, the education minister further said. The Imphal Free Press published the reported scam on March 16, 2023. 

“The government has certain rules and regulations regarding the establishment of private universities in the state and as such, concerned authorities will investigate the matter to ascertain if the university had violated any procedures,” the minister told the Imphal Free Press.

The education minister also pointed out that the state government was striving relentlessly to rectify all levels of the education sector in Manipur.

Basanta Kumar further informed that cleansing and improving the education sector of the state is one of the primary objectives of the government.

The education minister reiterated that the state government will seriously investigate and strive to resolve the matter at the earliest. “We will look into it,” he reiterated.

Also responding to media queries on the state measures on tackling the ongoing illegal infiltration issue along the India-Myanmar border, the minister stated that a cabinet sub-committee had been formed to assess the present issue along the India-Myanmar border.

The minister further informed that the sub-committee will visit all the vulnerable border areas of the state soon.

“During the tour, the sub-committee will sum up all illegal immigration camps along the border,” he said.

Basantakumar stated that the state government is mapping out strategies to organise the refugee influx on humanitarian grounds. “We will keep all refugees intact so as to not affect our indigenous demography,” he said.

“The government will also work out measures to deport them,” the state minister further said.

The minister also informed that the process to enact the Population Commission is underway. He stated that detailed assessment is needed to fix the parameters of the commission to ensure correct census.

He also pointed out that the government supports the peoples’ movement for National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation in Manipur.

The demand of the concerned citizens is duly noted and the government will do the necessary requirements to fulfil the demand, Basantakumar added.

“The state government is working seriously to send requisite proposal to the Central government to mete out the updation in Manipur,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking as chief guest at the closing ceremony of MU Week 2023, Th Basantakumar stated that education is the foundation on which the development and advancement of society is built.

He exhorted the students to learn soft skills if they wish to compete with other students in the country.

“We should equip ourselves with appropriate skills and knowledge if we want to succeed in life,” he said.

MLA of Khangabok AC Surjakumar Okram, vice chancellor of Manipur Univerisity professor N Lokendra singh, dean of Students' Welfare professor Moirangthem Premjit Singh among others attended the closing ceremony.
