Incidents of husband killing wife have been increasing in the state since January 2022, and all stakeholders, including NGOs working in crime against women and girls, need to study the cause in a collective effort to bring a solution, Women Action for Development secretary Sobita Mangsatabam said in Imphal on Monday.

Mangsatabam stressed the need to check the rising cases of husbands killing their wives and children in the state even as WAD is carrying out a fact finding into the murder of a wife by her husband at Kumbi on December 2.

As a part of 'The international fortnight day observance for elimination of crime against women', WAD is continuing its fact finding of murder cases mission in Manipur, the secretary of WAD said.

The accused husband, identified as Thiyam Deven from Kumbi Terakhong Thoubal Leikai, is currently in judicial custody.

Sobita said that such similar incidents are on the rise in the state, especially this year and warned that such cases should be taken seriously and the causes investigated so as to come up with measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

She also expressed the lack of toxicology and forensic medicine in the state for delaying the investigation of the case and submission of the charge sheet.

"Alcoholic husbands killing alcoholic wife should not be taken lightly as the state has allowed liquor in the state and the crime is likely to increase", she said.

She urged for collective work and efforts to find out causes of such crimes and recommended the state government for a better policy to handle such.
