‘Human traffickers are like foxes in sheep’s skin’

The people of Manipur should be vigilant as the state has the potential of being a source, transit and destination of human trafficking, Social Welfare Director Ngangom Uttam Singh said

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2020 was on Friday observed at directorate of Social Welfare.

The programme was organised in collaboration with a national level NGO, FXB Suraksha and ECPAT Luxemburg. As a part of the observance, a music video “Emagi Phiji Marumda” was released as an anti-trafficking awareness tool to reach the general public.

During the programme, Social Welfare Director Ngangom Uttam Singh said that there is an essence of collective responsibility from every section of society to curb the menace of trafficking in persons. The people of Manipur should be vigilant as the state has the potential of being a source, transit and destination of human trafficking, he said.

“Human traffickers are like foxes in sheep’s skin. Usually they lure their victims with a promise of giving a better life and opportunities to make money. Their mere promise brings only nightmare which will haunt throughout life. To prevent from such circumstances, everyone should be vigilant to protect our loved ones from being trafficked and abused,” he added.

The music video that released on Friday not only depicted the ordeal of the survivors of trafficking but also contained important messages from many officials like Director of Social Welfare, Ngangom Uttam Singh; deputy director, department of Social Welfare (Women Programme), Binobala Nongmeikapam; director, ECPAT Luxembourg, Thomas Kauffmann and chief executive director, FXB, India Suraksha, Mamta Borgoyary. In the music video they gave the message on inter-agency collaboration and the needs of creating awareness to combat trafficking in persons, which is a form of organised crime.

The artistes in the music video are Pushparani Huidrom, Guru Rewben Mashangva, Pinky Saikhom and Sorri Senjam. The lyrics of the song are written by Sunil Meetei, who is the project officer of FXB India Suraksha and the music video is directed by Tarun Wang.
