HSLC exam candidate dies while saving drowning brother in Chandel river

Kuki actor Paolen Kom said, deceased Thangminjoy Baite deserves nomination for "Jeevan Raksha Padak" for his heroism and bravery in saving his brother's life.

A 16-year-old boy, who was appearing in the ongoing HSLC examination, died while trying to save his brother from drowning in Chakpi River in Sugnu of Chandel district, Manipur.

The incident took place on April 9 and the boy has been identified as Thangminjoy Baite (16), son of Nengboi Baite and late Seimang Khongsai of Boljang village in Sugnu of Chandel district

According to one Minthang, the cousin of the deceased, owing to water scarcity in the village, Thangminjoy and his brother along with few friends went to the Chakpi River for washing their clothes around noon. After a few minutes, Thangminjoy saw his younger brother Thangjalen drowning in the water, and he jumped into the river and pulled out his brother and saved him, but lost his own life in the process.

His lifeless body was found later by the search team from the village who rushed to the spot after learning of the incident.

"I am proud of my son's bravery and heroism in saving his brother's life", the helpless mother said, adding that "he sacrificed his life to give me his brother's life."

Thangminjoy Baite was a student of St Joseph's Higher Secondary School, Sugnu.

Hearing of the news, Kuki actor Paolen Kom has sought the sympathy of Chief Minister N Biren Singh and his cabinet colleagues to help the poor mother. The actor posted on his wall about the heart-breaking story and prayed for helping the poor mother while seeking the sympathy of Chief Minister N Biren Singh in Manipuri language.

The actor also said Thangminjoy Baite deserves a nomination for "Jeevan Raksha Padak" for his heroism and bravery in saving his brother's life.
