Manipur Pony and Polo Player’s Welfare Association (MP&PPWA) on Thursday appealed to the authorities concerned to enact stringent measures to safeguard the indigenous horse breed and others as their feeding ground had become limited due to inundation of Lamphelpat.
Speaking to the media at the Palace Compound in Imphal, MP&PPWA general secretary Chongtham Ajit stated that the government’s allocation of the feeding ground at Palace Compound lightened the burden of horse owners and polo clubs in Imphal East and West.
“However, the number of horses in the compound has gradually decreased due to depletion of grass feeds. Over 230 horses used to feed in the ground but due to the issue over 100 horses have been removed by their owners. The owners of the remaining horses are feeding them grass feed by ordering them from far flung places,” he said.
As such, he urged the state authorities to look into the issue swiftly and extend possible aid to the horse owners and clubs who are reeling under financial pressure to feed the horses.
We want the government’s possible aid in raising and safeguarding them, he added.
