The memorial ceremony of the victims of the Heirok Thabal Chongba massacre of 2008, in which three youth were shot dead by unidentified miscreants, was organised by RPN Memorial Trust on Thursday.
RPN Memorial Trust organised the memorial ceremony at the RPN memorial hall at Heirok Part I, Umang Laikon. The observation paid respect to the three young Yaoshang celebrants, Thokchom Romesh, Thokchom Promila and Laishram Nirmala, who were killed in the mass shooting by unidentified gunmen at the Thabal Chongba at Heirok on the fourth day of Yaoshang celebration in 2008.
As part of the programme, the family members of the victims and public of Heirok paid floral tribute to the three departed souls, followed by a public meeting in which the impacts of the incident were discussed.
Speaking on the occasion, RPN Memorial Trust publicity secretary L Megha recalled the incident and highlighted the importance of the annual observation of the memorial ceremony in maintaining peace by educating the public. Stating that the death of the three young souls will not be in vain if the public come together and stand against violence and gun culture, he appealed to the public to extend more support for the annual observation in the future.
The event was attended by wife of Heirok assembly constituency MLA Thokchom Radheshyam Th (O) Bijyalauxmi, RPN Memorial Trust vice president Laishram Samer, Heirok Part I pradhan L Khamba, Heirok Municipal Council councillor Kh Noyon and social activist L Basanta.
It can be mentioned that representing 300 SPOs of Heirok, and three commanders paid respects to the deceased victims of the massacre.
