Expressing concern over the rise in the number of drug users in the state and crimes committed by them, the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) on Tuesday urges the state government to establish a strong policy to check the menace.
The state government must take the matter seriously and take action to ban all forms of buying and selling of drugs in the state, AMUCO stated in a release.
The state government should empower the security forces in the state to battle the drugs menace effectively, it stated, adding that since drugs are the common cause behind heinous crimes, they must be banned with the support from both the public and the security forces.
Since prevention is better than cure, it would be a wise move to take timely action to prevent such heinous crimes from taking place, AMUCO stated. If the state security was truly committed in combating the drugs issue, it would not have been a challenging task in controlling the menace, AMUCO stated, adding a political will is required to realise the goal.
The ‘War Against Drugs’ must be strengthened so that drug lords and kingpins can no longer have the freedom or power to carry out illicit activities, it stated.
Concerning the recent incident in which a minor was allegedly gangraped, there is a possibility that they might have carried out the crime under the influence of drugs, AMUCO stated.
AMUCO firmly believes that these crimes can be prevented by banning all forms of highly intoxicating drugs in the state. It cannot be ruled out that the youths becoming restless and aimless, going against the rules and laws and the increasing cases of juvenile delinquency etc. are all connected with how the government is running the state, it added.
AMUCO stated that these issues cannot be simply solved by arresting people after a crime has already taken place or any other reason for the matter, and intimidating the arrested persons by the police. Therefore, the state government must establish a strong policy and bring a lasting solution to the matter, it added
