Goods from border trade town Moreh, which are in high demand and which market is growing in other parts of Manipur, are posing a big challenge in income tax collection, as most of the items do not mention MRP or are not certified by FSSAI.
“Items transported from Moreh, whether it be edible or not, have no MRP and are not certified by FSSAI and that has become a big challenge on tax collection, Ranjan Yumnam, Joint Secretary, Horticulture and Cooperation, Government of Manipur said Tuesday.
Ranjan was addressing the World Consumer Rights Day observed at GM Hall by Consumer’s Club Manipur under the theme “Fair Digital Finance”.
The horticulture official called for addressing the said issue by the concerned authorities, saying there is no one who can claim to be not a consumer.
“We are all consumers”, he said, stating that everyone consumes something from someone depending on his or her requirement.
Even in the election people are voting representatives for good governance, it is also a kind of consumer, said Ranjan.
“Since we all are consumers, there should be rights for obtaining desired commodities and the right service. No one should feel sympathy for any things to endorse corruption,” he said.
He also said that in Manipur the unit measuring for jewellery should be standardized and upgraded into an international unit so that anyone and everyone from any state or country should be aware of it.
In connection with the theme of fair digital finance, Ranjan said that the global digital world has become so advanced that the payment system is on the fingertip; however, in Manipur, there are still 27 blocks that do not have banks.
Today is the day when it says to cut the wire but there is still a place where there is no network connection in the state, he said.
While those who are using digital platforms for every second do not have the time to read the terms and conditions of any App (that you are downloading) and agree and download. No one thinks about where your personal documents went. Fair transparent system should develop, he added.
The World Consumer Rights Day was also observed by Consumer Court Advocate Association, Manipur at Manipur Press Club.
