Two persons were arrested and gold worth Rs 80 lakh seized from their possession in two separate incidents by a team of Customs officials in Imphal and Thoubal areas, sources said
The Anti-Smuggling Unit of the Customs Imphal Division, following a tip-off, arrested a man with 1.242 kilogram of gold items of foreign origin worth Rs 54,97,332 while he was trying to smuggle them to New Delhi from Imphal airport in an Air India flight on September 15.
The gold smuggler, arrested from the departure hall of Imphal Airport under Section 104 of Customs Act, 1962, was identified as Shakir Ahmed, 26, son of Abdul Hakim of Lilong, Thoubal district.
The gold items were found concealed inside the rectum of the arrested person in four oval shaped packets in paste form while thorough checking of the assused person, an official said.
In another breakthrough, a team of Customs officers confiscated three gold biscuits weighing 498 grams worth Rs 25,39,800 from the possession of one woman from Khongjom Area in Thoubal district.
The woman, identified as M Jinat, wife of M Selung Singh of Lilong Arapti, Thoubal district was travelling as a passenger in a Maruti-Eco Van when the arrest took place. Further investigation in the two cases are under way, officials said.
