The Manipur Hills and Plain Contractors’ Association (MHPCA) has demanded that contract works be given to local contractors instead of giving it to non-local firms.
In connection with the demand, members of the association on Wednesday staged a one-day sit-in-protest in front of the Public Works Department, Khoyathong, Imphal West.
MHPCA joint secretary Mayanglangbam Sarat Singh told media that most of the contract works have been given to non-local firms by sidelining the local contractors. All major contract works have been given to non-local companies, including NHIDCL, BIPL and others, he said.
He said that when local-contractors get the contract work, local laborers and local engineers are hired.
As most of the contract works are handed over to non-local companies or firms, local contractors, labourers and engineers, who are engaged as side engineers, are facing a huge problem, he added.
He appealed to the authorities concerned to give contract works to local contractors for the welfare of not only for the local labourers, engineers but also for the state.
The protesters demonstrated with placards that read, “Save life of local contractors", “Hand over the national highway work of NHIDCL to local contractors” and others.
