Gender bias must be avoided at all cost: Churachandpur additional DC

An awareness rally on women empowerment was held on Friday in Churachandpur to mark the 250th birth Anniversary of Raja Rammohan Roy

An awareness rally on the theme of women empowerment was held on Friday in Churachandpur to mark the 250th birth Anniversary of Raja Rammohan Roy who is called the Father of modern India. It was organised by District Library, Churachandpur and sponsored by Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata.

The rally by school students from New Lamka Upper Primary School was flagged off by additional DC Yumnam Nelson at Bungmual which culminated at District Library where a formal function was held.

During the programme, the additional DC spoke about Raja Rammohon Roy and how he was responsible for ushering new India where women are emancipated, Sati is abolished, child marriage made unlawful, caste system abolished, etc. through his institution, the Brahmo Samaj. He said the late leader was also called the father of modern India and through his principle, all the pre and pro leaders of Indian leaders are his followers. The additional DC also spoke about the ills of gender bias which should be avoided at all cost, asking the men and women to respect each other for further growth.

SDO of Churachandpur, Darun Kumar, encouraged students to have ambition for success while chief of Hiangtam Lamka, Thangkhosuanmung Guite, said that empowerment of women is necessary because if it empowers women, it empowers family, society and the country. A country will be paralysed without the contribution of women, the chief added.

Additional SP, Hasby Haokip, spoke on the theme ‘women empowerment’ and thanked the late leader Raja Rammohan Roy for enabling women to go to school and study now as they were not given a chance then in India. Woman would be married off as part of child marriage practice then but it was Raja Rammohon Roy who changed it all, Hasby Haokip said and called on all the male students to encourage their sisters to study, get knowledge and excerpt their right. She also told the students to study and read as many books as possible, including novels, to brush up their confidence and knowledge.

On the occasion, the in-charge of District library, L Lalginlian, said that the library was as good as defunct since 2013 after the retirement of all staff. However, it was restored in 2018 with contribution from the district administration, ADCC and the then local MLA, he said and narrated about the many ups and downs of the library where books, amounting to 219, were donated by 25 individuals.
