The Manipur government on Thursday clamped full curfew in Imphal East and West districts as a precautionary measure until further orders.
Curfew was relaxed for the first time from 5 am till 9 pm from September 13, as the situation improved.
The latest order comes in the wake of fresh clashes between police and protesters over the arrest of five armed village volunteers from Kongba area by police.
Protesters had been demanding the unconditional release of the village volunteers and a 48-hour shutdown of Imphal had just ended on Wednesday midnight.
The lack of response from the state government had led to a 'Jail Bharo' or Fill the jails protest from Thursday in which thousands of womenfolk came out of their homes and stormed the police stations in Imphal.
As per the latest notifications issued on Thursday by the respective district magistrates, the decision came after an urgent apprehension of further disturbance in law and order in the districts and to prevent any untoward incidents and loss of life and property.
In an order issued earlier, curfew timings for all areas in Imphal East and Imphal West districts for Thursday were relaxed from 5 am to 9 pm.
The latest statement said that curfew hours which were relaxed from 5 am to 9 pm for Thursday in both districts stand withdrawn with effect from 5 pm of the same day. It mentioned that the restriction of movement of the general public is enforced in all areas of the two districts.
However, the movement of persons belonging to essential services such as Health, Electricity, PHED, Schools/Colleges, Municipality, Press and Electronic Media, functioning of courts and to and fro movement of flight passengers will be exempted from the imposition of curfew, it added.
