SANULAL maintained that the appeal had been made in light of the ongoing conflict and to show solidarity with the victims who have gravely suffered so much.

Speaking to the media at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal, SANULAL member Aheibam Sofia stated that thousands of women were still stranded in numerous relief camps with an uncertain future.

They too would have enjoyed the celebration if not for the crisis but the reality is otherwise, she added.

Instead, she exhorted people to donate the celebratory items for Ningol Chakouba to people in the relief camps.

“Let us share the celebration of Ningol Chakouba with those in the relief camps and donate as much as we can in connection with the festival,” she said.

Meanwhile, SANULAL advisor Thingnam Ibethoi stated that the majority of the newly wedded womenfolk have voluntarily announced to refrain from celebrating Ningol Chakouba this year.

“They have also volunteered to donate their Ningol Chakouba gifts from their loved ones to people in the relief camps,” she said.

She further stated that celebrating Ningol Chakouba with fervour and gaiety is the last thing on Meitei womenfolk’s conscience at the moment.
