Five arrested, brown sugar worth Rs 4.5 crore seized on Indo-Myanmar border

A combined team of special commando unit, a column of 43 Assam Rifles and Chakpikarong police station apprehended five persons with 2.273 kg brown sugar around 5 pm on Tuesday during a joint patrol along the Indo-Myanmar border to thwart illegal infiltrations.

Five persons were arrested and 2.273 kg brown sugar worth around Rs 4,54,60,000 were seized from their possession on Tuesday along the Indo-Myanmar border.

A combined team of special commando unit, a column of 43 Assam Rifles and Chakpikarong police station apprehended the five persons with 2.273 kg brown sugar around 5 pm on Tuesday during a joint patrol along the Indo-Myanmar border to thwart illegal infiltrations.

The apprehended persons have been identified as Seitinthang Haokip, 22, son of late Thangkhongam Haokip of Molcham Village Chandel district; Ngamminlun Guite, 25, son of Tonminthang Guite of Yangoubung village, Tengnoupal district; Seiminlun Guite, 24, son of Themsei Guite of Yangoubung village, Tengnoupal district; Seiminlal Guite, 16, son of Yangkhomang Guite of Yangoubung village Tengnoupal district and Doukhosei Mate, 35, son of Holkhothang Mate of Champol village, Chandel district.

Police reported that the combined team under the overall supervision of superintendent of police, Chandel district and superintendent of police, in-charge, special commando unit, Khabeisoi Th Krishnatombi Singh conducted a joint patrol along the Indo-Myanmar border to thwart the illegal infiltration and war against drugs.

While patrolling, they received information regarding movement of drugs in a truck (Shaktiman) along the Indo-Myanmar border. However, the vehicle bypassed the joint patrolling party via an alternate route.

Accordingly, Chakpikarong police personnel and special commando stopped and detained the vehicle bearing registration number MN04-4721.

On verification, the five occupants identified themselves and on further examination of the vehicle, a total of 186 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar were found hidden at the rear seat. A total cash of Rs 49,620 and five mobile phones were seized from their possession, police added.

Further, the arrested persons disclosed that the seized brown sugar was brought from Moreh for sale in Churachandpur.

The apprehended persons along with the seized item were handed over to Chakpikarong police station for further action.

 

Heroin seized, one arrested

Meanwhile, in another incident, Kakching district police seized 293 grams of heroin powder and arrested one person at Wapokpi Chingol Leikai, Kakching district on Tuesday evening.

The arrested person has been identified as one Wangkhem Sarkar Meitei, 47, son of late Th Maimu of Wapokpi Chingol Leikai, Kakching district.

Police reported that at around 4.30 pm on Tuesday, it received a tip-off about the movement of illegal in and around Sugnu Wanpokpi area. Based on the information, a team conducted surveillance and patrolling at the Sugnu Wapokpi area. The team was led by officer-in-charge, Sugnu police station B Lunthang Vaiphei and women police under the command of additional superintendent of police (law and order), Kakching district Agustine J Khongsai and under the supervision of SP Kakching.

One vehicle was seen approaching the area and it drove faster on seeing the police team, so as to escape. Noticing the suspicious manner in which the car was driven, the police team pursued and tried to identify and detain the car. After more than 30 minute of hot pursuit, the car was seen entering one unknown house in a locality, police reported.

Police further reported that after five minutes, the police team arrived and cordoned the suspected residential area. During the operation, one Santro car bearing registration number MN02 G 0437 was found parked at the premises of one Wangkhem Sarkar Meitei.

The house was immediately searched and checked in the presence of two civil witnesses. During the search, 22 green Soap cases containing suspected Heroin powder, weighing around 293 grams excluding the weight of soap cases were found under the foot pads of the car.

The police team seized the drugs by observing formalities.

Sarkar who is also the owner of the house was arrested. Later, the arrested person and the seized items have been handed over to Sugnu police station for further necessary action.
