Barely a week after archbishop (ameritus) Joseph Mittathany died, his close associate and the first Diocesan priest to Manipur reverend monsignor Joseph Kachiramattam passed away on Saturday after fighting an old-age-related illness. He was 96.

Reverend monsignor Joseph Kachiramattam was the first diocesan priest to be posted in Manipur. He has been living in Manipur for the last 60 years since 1958 and has served the people of Manipur, carrying God’s will and teaching the truth of life.

He was 32 years old when he volunteered to be posted in Manipur after one of the three Italians priests that was serving at the Mission Station in Manipur had to leave because the priest had not acquired Indian citizenship.

Father Mattam, as he was fondly called, was based at Don Bosco, Chingmeirong and he extensively toured Sugnu and Churachandpur. He set up parishes and schools in remote locations including St. Joseph's Parish in Sugnu. He was later appointed as the parish priest at the parish by the late Archbishop (Emeritus) Joseph Mittathany.

During his stay in Sugnu, he suffered from Pleurisy and had to leave the Parish to get treatment in Imphal. Two months later, he recovered from the disease but had to go to his native place in Kerala to get further treatment.

After a six months stay in Kerala, he was recalled and posted at Bishop House in Dibrugarh. He worked there as spiritual director for six months before requesting to be sent to Manipur. He was then appointed as the Parish Priest at Good Shepherd Parish in Churachandpur. He also worked as the Principal at his school, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Churachandpur during this period. After eight years in Churachandpur, he came back to Imphal and started work at Pastoral Training Centre.

Manipur became a diocese in 1980 with the late Archbishop (Ameritus) Joseph Mittathany as the Bishop. In 1984, reverend monsignor Joseph Kachiramattam was appointed by the Bishop as vicar general of the Diocese, which he held for 25 years.

From 1999-2002, he was appointed as parish priest, St. Joseph's Cathedral Parish, Imphal. From 2002-2008, he was the Rector of Archbishop's House, Imphal from when he retired at Priests Home, Mantripukhri, Imphal.

The condolences and funeral service will be held on July 18 at the Cathedral.
