Rameshwor was assaulted after he reported a news item stating that some miscreants who are causing violence at Heirok assembly constituency had rushed inside the residence of former MLA Moirangthem Okendro. The news was published on October 24 in a local daily, he added.

“As per information reported by the victim, some miscreants came to his residence while he along with his father was sitting in the courtyard at around 7:30 am. For reporting the news item, he was physically assaulted by the miscreants, who are Congress workers led by Heirok Youth Congress Committee president Maibam Tomthin Meitei, who is also the publicity secretary of Heirok Block Congress Committee. Rameshwor was later admitted to Thoubal district hospital,” said Bashanta.

After the victim identified 13 of the accused persons, it was found that all of them are Congress workers led by Tomthin, he added.

Bashanta continued that even though Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) vice-president Kh Devbrata had clarified that the accused persons are not related with Congress party, there is proof that the miscreants are directly linked with the party and they are Congress workers.

Instead of defending themselves and misleading the people, Congress should apologise to the public for the heinous act, he added.

Meanwhile, Thoubal  additional SP Sachidananda Sharma said that the 13 accused persons mentioned in the FIR had been summoned at Heirok Police Station. As the charges in the FIR are bailable offences, all of them were set free by granting bail.
