The family of a three-and-half-year-old child who succumbed to his injuries in a hit-and-run case which took place on December 24 near Irabot Statue, Nambol has appealed to the authorities concerned to arrest the culprits at the earliest.

Speaking to the media during a press conference held at Manipur Press Club on Sunday, Sanglakpam Naocha Sharma who is the father of the deceased child said that at around 8 pm on January 24, five people who were coming to buy medicines from a pharmacy were hit by a car near Nambol Irabot Statue. The culprit immediately fled from the spot, he said. Of the five people, three were left injured while one succumbed to his injuries four days after the incident, he added.

“My wife S Ranjita and my son were among the five people. My son passed away after being hospitalised for four days and my wife was left with serious injuries. Her knee and ankle were fractured in three places. The other three also received minor injuries,” he said.

Sharma said the state government not finding the culprits even after a month of the incident is unfortunate.

“Had the culprit brought the injured persons at a hospital instead of fleeing away, my son could have survived. The state government should arrest such heartless persons who do not value one’s life,” he said, appealing to the authority concerned to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.

Human Research Mobilization Group Khwairakpam president Punsilemba Meitei urged the state government to arrest the culprits at earliest, considering the pain and trauma faced by the family.

The Nambol Police had urged the group not to launch any kind of agitations by assuring to arrest the culprit soon, he said. However, even after a month of the incident, not a single person is yet to be identified, he added.

“If the state government is sincere enough in the case, the offender would have been already arrested by now as there are CCTV cameras installed near the spot where the mishap took place. Not awarding any punishment to the culprits will cause frequent happening of such incidents in the future,” he added.
