Drunken brawl leaves one dead in Chandel district

A man was shot dead at Warkhuirin village under Chakpikarong police station in Chandel district.

A man, who attempted to intervene in a drunken brawl, was shot dead while another was left injured at Warkhuirin village under Chakpikarong police station in Chandel district around 1.30 am on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as one SR Koningtha, 26, son of SR Rajesh from Unopat village and the injured as KL Belove son of KL Runlel from Warkhuirin village in Chandel district.

Police reported that a scuffle took place among three villagers after they consumed alcohol at around 1.30 am near the residence of Runlel.

Koningtha and Belove were not involved in the brawl but merely attempted to intervene. Among the three villagers, one HB Shemhluwng, 45 of the same village fired his licensed double barrel breech loading (DBBL) gun.

Koningtha was shot dead on the spot while Belove sustained bullet injury.

The injured was rushed to Sugnu hospital for treatment while the body has been deposited at JNIMS morgue. The culprits remained at large while a case has been registered at Chakpikarong police station in connection with the incident, police said.
