A team led by commandant 8 IR (CDO) battalion N Madhunimai Singh assisted by a team of NAB Manipur arrested one individual at Saijin Pallak in Imphal East while brown sugar worth 1.5 crore in the international market was seized on Friday.
As per the sources, the arrested person has been identified as one Md Rajkhan,20, son of Kh Salimuddin, a resident of Yairipok Ningthounai Mayai Leikai, Imphal East.
The source informed that around 4 pm on Friday, based on a tip off about the movement of illegal items, the police teams rushed to the mentioned spot Saijin Pallak near Bujari Brick Field along Thiyam - Waithou road under Irilbung Police station in Imphal East.
It continued that the team stopped the suspected vehicle, (one red honda activa bearing registration number MN06SE 7357) for verification and the occupant of the vehicle identified himself as Md Rajkhan was also arrested by observing formalities.
On searching the vehicle, 510 grams of suspected brown sugar were recovered from the tool box of his vehicle and seized on his production, the source added.
On preliminary interrogation, the arrested person revealed that he worked with one Md Firoz, son of Md Oli, Yairipok Tulihal Toupokpi, under Andro Police station. The teams, as a follow up action, immediately rushed to the house of Md Firoz and on searching the house, 437 grams of suspected brown sugar were recovered, it stated.
A digital weighing machine and a sum of Rs 1 lakh (all in 500 rupee notes) suspected to be sales proceeds of drugs were also recovered and seized by observing all necessary formalities.
The total weight of seized suspected brown sugar was 947 grams, which would be priced at about 1,50,00,000 in the international market.
The arrested person and the seized items were handed over to Irilbung Police station for taking up further necessary legal action, the source informed.
It may be mentioned that MR and IRB battalions had been empowered for arresting and seizing drugs by the government in continuation of its War on Drugs.
