Opposition MLA K Ranjit Singh, while seeking attention of the government through the Speaker during the Monsoon session on Monday said that a discussion or a motion is needed to find out the vulnerable places in hill areas to prevent another Marangching incident.
He made the statement on the Assembly floor during the second session of 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly by taking the advantage of zero hour.
At the massive landslide which took place at Marangching, Noney district on June 29, more than 70 people died and the state government is still continuing rescue operations at the site, he said.
The House had extended condolence to the incident but the issue needs to be discussed on the assembly floor. If possible, the issue needs to be discussed as a motion in order to find out other vulnerable places, he maintained.
The railway works were carried out after getting clearance from the Ministry of Forest Environment and during the survey of Manipur Meteorological department, it was found that there were fissures underground at that area, and two earthquakes had already taken place, he said. It is also reported that there is a possibility that similar incidents may occur in the near future, he added.
Ranjit further raised concern that a similar tragic incident could occur again at any time and anyplace.
“I thought that someone will table the issue to discuss precautionary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future but seven sittings have been already completed without bringing up the matter. The issue need to be discussed perhaps as a motion to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future,” said Ranjit
