A team of officials headed by chairman of the Cabinet Sub-committee and Tribal Affairs minister Letpao Haokip carried out an inspection for setting up a temporary detention center for Myanmar refugees at Singngat in Churachandpur district.
Among others, the team includes members of Cabinet Sub-committee, namely Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar Singh, Water Resource Development Minister Awangbow Newmai, Home commissioner, IG of intelligence, SP immigration, SP and DC of Churachandpur district.
The team inspected four barracks inside Singngat Police Station to house 50 refugees each, making it a total capacity of 200 at the site which will shortly be converted into detention centres for Myanmar refugees.
On returning from Singngat and addressing the media at the DC official chamber, minister Letpao Haokip said that the government of Manipur will provide shelter homes for illegal Myanmar refugees at Singngat.
The Sub-committee chairman said that the government will provide them food, healthcare and accommodation provided that the Myanmar refugees report at the DC office where ID cards will be issued in their favor. They will be deported back after the condition in their country improves, he added
He requested all refugees to voluntarily come forward, stating that the Manipur state government is not here to arrest them but to help them. They cannot be helped if they do not report and get the temporary ID cards from the DC, he added.
