To keep the indigenous people of Manipur safeguarded, villagers of Khanarok Village, Imphal East district on Monday staged a one-day sit-in-protest at the community hall of Khanarok Village, Imphal East, demanding an immediate implementation of National Register of Citizen (NRC) in the state.

Descent Youth Club general secretary Sh Dinesh said cases of non-locals without valid documents coming and settling in the state have been increasing not only in the hills but also in the valley. The locals should stop providing shelter to such outsiders just for their benefit and vested interests, he said.

If the state government fails to implement NRC at the earliest, then it will become a main issue affecting the indigenous population of Manipur, he pointed out. The Inner Line Permit system has already been implemented in Manipur but the indigenous population continues to face a huge threat from outsiders, he added.

The government must implement NRC at the earliest order to filter out and remove the illegal migrants from the soil of Manipur, he said. He urged the state government to take necessary legal action against those who are providing shelter to non-locals who do not carry proper documents.

He further pointed out that the state government has also issued a gazette notification on March 10 as ‘Manipur Regulation of Sale Deeds Registration (Amendment), Rules, 2023.’

“No deed shall be registered for transfer of land by way of gift, sale or mortgage from an indigenous person to a non-indigenous person, as defined under rule or guidelines framed under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873,” he added.
