A large number of women vendors came out on the streets of Lamlong Bazar in Imphal East on Thursday afternoon holding banners and shouting slogans demanding the inclusion of the Meetei community in the ST list.

The agitation was taken up under the banner of Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) and Lamlong Keithel Phambi Apunba Nupi Lup (LKPANL).

Speaking to the media, president of LKPANL, RK Dhanabati, stated that the demand for ST status has been wheeling around the state for more than 10 years and it is unfortunate that the state government has not taken up any progress to fulfil it.

It is known by all that the central government has also given a green signal on the demand and is waiting for recommendation from the state government, she said, adding that cent percent of the MLAs and ministers visited by the STDCM team had given their assurance to support the movement.

Considering the facts, she questioned, “Why is the state government not recommending it till date? What is the reason behind this?”

Stating that the indigenous Meetei tribe of Manipur is currently without any constitutional safeguard to protect their distinctive indigenous identity in their ancestral land, she stressed the urgent need for the inclusion of Meetei in the ST list considering the future of the community.

As a people’s representative, she, on behalf of all the Meetei community, called on chief minister N Biren to consider the demand and take up all possible steps for recommending the demand to the central government at the earliest.
