Custodial Death of Arambam Nanao: MHRC issues notice to CS, DGP Manipur to submit status report of investigation

MHRC took up a complaint petition filed by CSCHR for intervention in the investigation on the alleged custodial torture and death of Arambam Nanao, 37, after he was arrested by a police team.

The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on Monday issued notice to the Chief Secretary, DGP Manipur, SP of Imphal West, OC of Imphal Police Station calling on them to submit the status report of the investigation in connection with alleged custodial torture and death of Arambam Nanao, on or before May 13. 

MHRC took up a complaint petition filed by CSCHR for intervention in the investigation on the alleged custodial torture and death of Arambam Nanao, 37, son of (L) Arambam Dhanajoy of Kangabam Leikai after he was arrested by a police team.

The CSCHR urged the commission to monitor the investigation to ensure that prompt, thorough, independent and impartial investigation is conducted.

MHRC, after perusal of the materials, felt a prima facie case for human rights violation was made out. Therefore, the commission registered a case for inquiry under section 12 of the protection of human rights act, 1993.

The commission has also asked the concerns to submit the report along with the FIR copy registered under section 304/34 IPC and post mortem report.
