Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation, All Manipur Meitei Pangal Students Organisation along with VCPC, TEA, ATUCO and ADTC on Wednesday strongly condemned the granting of bail to one Md Munir alias Sanayai who has been accused of committing arson.
Md Munir has been accused of torching a house belonging to one Md Sirajuddin alias Ibocha on the intervening night of August 16 and 17 at Yairipok Tulihal Awang Leikai.
A joint statement issued by the organisations claimed that the house belonging to Sirajuddin caught fire around 2.30 am on August 17 when the family members were at rest inside the house.
The statement claimed that the family members ran out the house and saw Md Munir holding a match box and a bottle of petrol and lighting the house. However, as the family members were busy, trying to put off the fire, Munir fled from the scene, the statement claimed.
The family members saw that a motorcycle (bullet) and the cupboard containing sports kits for the club which were kept outside the house also caught fire, it added.
The organisations claimed that the officer in charge of Andro Police Station and his team which came to investigate the site also found the bottle and the matchbox and the family members also told the police that Munir was behind the arson.
On August 19, with instruction of superintendent of police Imphal East, the officer in charge of Andro police arrested the accused Munir and he was remanded for five days.
Later on August 24, Munir was produced in Imphal West court for the trial after which he was granted bail, it added.
The statement added that the accused Munir was involved in selling drugs and intoxicants in the past.
Expressing disappointment, the civil bodies announced that they have also taken a resolution to stop supporting the state government’s ‘War on Drugs’, it added. The civil bodies will start protests if justice is not delivered in connection with the incident, it stated while appealing to the people to extend support.
