Churachandpur DC, women leaders call on Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey

Deputy Commissioner of Churcahndpur Dharun Kumar briefed the Governor about the condition of around 14,000 displaced people in the relief camps, a release stated.

Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar called on Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday and apprised her about the prevailing situation in the district.

During the meeting, the Governor handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to the DC and asked him to hand over the same to Sepoy Tongkhongam, a 75-year-old non-pensioner soldier from Churachandpur district, whose house was burned down in the disturbances last year, the Raj Bhavan stated in a release.

The amount was given by Support Our Heroes (SOH), a Delhi-based NGO which is providing help since 2017 to the needy ex-soldiers and their families and Veer Naris/Widows, it stated.

The DC briefed the Governor about the condition of around 14,000 displaced people in the relief camps and said that essential items like food, water etc. were given to them and reading materials were also provided to the students, it mentioned.

He said, of the total 500 temporary shelter homes sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs, constructions are in full swing and will be completed by August this year, it added. He also informed that skill training programmess for 100 youths in the hospitality sector are in progress and further said that handloom and handicraft training programmes for local artisans will also be conducted, it noted.

The Governor directed the DC to ensure law and order in the district and take all steps to ensure safety and security of the people, it asserted. She assured that the Centre is committed to resolve the impasse and said that tangible steps will be seen soon, it said. She also urged the DC to initiate training programmes for the displaced people under various schemes and programmes, it stated.

Meanwhile, eight women leaders also called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan and urged for an early settlement to the ongoing conflict between the two communities in the state, the release stated.

The team also highlighted the hardships faced by the displaced people in Jiribam district owing to the recent spate of violence there and appealed to her to solve the crisis, it stated.

Uikey assured that all possible efforts are being made to bring a lasting solution to the crisis, it mentioned. She further said that the Centre is committed to resolving the crisis and asserted that concerted steps will be taken up soon, it stated.

The Governor also met with representatives of 83 selected Assistant Professors of Dhanamanjuri University, Imphal at Raj Bhavan, wherein she was apprised of the grievances faced by them, it said.

The professors told her that although their selection result was out in February this year, they have not been given the offer letters by the University till date, and requested her help on the same, it added.

The Governor assured them that she will ask the authorities concerned to do the needful at the earliest in the best interest of the teaching community in the State, it stated.
