Caretaker CM Biren, other Manipur BJP leaders leave for Delhi

Manipur BJP senior leaders, including caretaker chief minister N Biren Singh, state party president A Sharda Devi, state party organisation general secretary Abhay Giri and newly inducted MLA Th Bishwajit, left Imphal for New Delhi on Tuesday.

The four BJP leaders from Manipur are likely to hold meeting with Central leaders regarding the formation of a new state government. On Monday, Biren said the formation of a new government in the state will take some time as there are certain formalities to be followed.

The BJP won 32 of the 60 seats in the state Legislative Assembly election 2022, while rival Congress won only five seats and the NPP won seven seats. The JD-U won six seats, NPF five seats, independent candidates three seats, while two seats went to the newly formed Kuki Peoples’ Alliance party. 

A total of 59 newly elected members of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly took oath at the Manipur Assembly Hall, Imphal on Monday. The oath of office was administered by protem Speaker S Rajen Singh.

Rajen took oath as the protem Speaker one day earlier (on Sunday, March 13, 2022) at the Manipur Raj Bhawan in Imphal West.

Of the total 60 MLAs of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, 20 members are new faces and five are women members.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Board of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday appointed Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as observer and Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju as co-observer for the election of the Legislature Party leader in Manipur.
