A BSF assistant commandant and his wife were assaulted by the 20th Assam Rifles personnel at a checkpost, at Sita Lamkhai in Tengnoupal district around 12 pm on Friday. The two sustained injuries and have been rushed to a hospital in Imphal, sources said.
According to the sources, the incident occurred when the assistant commandant and his wife along with their family were coming from Moreh in their four wheeler vehicle (Tata Safari).
“They were stopped at Assam Rifles checkpost at Sita Lamkhai and while trying to stop at the check post, the vehicle lightly grazed an electric pole and sustained minor damages. following the incident, the AR personnel quarrelled with the wife of the BSF assistant commandant and the AR personnel physically assaulted her, at which the BSF assistant commandant got into a scuffle with the AR personnel. Then 10 or more AR personnel came out and thrashed the BSF assistant commandant,” it stated.
The injured BSF assistant commandant and his wife were rushed to the Tengnoupal PHC to avail first aid and were later admitted to Shija Hospitals, it maintained. The Tengnoupal police had filed a case regarding the incident to commence investigation, it stated. The BSF assistant commandant had been posted at Jammu and Kashmir, it mentioned.
Meanwhile, the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), Tengnoupal secretary Danial Mate in a press meet appealed to the Assam Rifle personnel to stop the “unjustified ill treatment and hindrance” to the locals and cautioned strong protest if their demand is ignored. He also condemned the unjust treatment of the AR to the locals, recalling other similar incidents, including the recent incident of the AR personnel assaulting a female IPS officer and a patient dying in an ambulance owing to “unnecessary delay” at the AR checkpost.
