United Committee Manipur (UCM) president Joychandra Konthoujam said people of Manipur are ready to launch intensified agitation if an amicable solution is not brought by June 20 in connection with the present border issue.
Joychandra told the Imphal Free Press on Monday on the sideline of a cleanliness drive conducted at Kekrupat in preparation with the observation of “21st The Great June Uprising, Unity Day” that Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Union Minister of State Education and External Affairs, RK Ranjan have failed to fulfil their assurance regarding the demand of UCM in connection with the present border issue.
The UCM president said that during a visit by a team of UCM, they witnessed construction of security fencing within the territorial boundary of Manipur. UCM has been demanding to pause the construction work before a solution on the present border dispute is brought, he said.
Joychandra said UCM started the survey starting from border pillar number 59 till the end of the border pillar. During the survey, UCM members found that there were no gates at the security fencing in which 15 gates should be there in each 10 km distance of fencing, he said.
UCM was about to declare an emergency in the border area but delayed it due to the upcoming “21st The Great June Uprising, Unity Day”, Joychandra said.
Representatives of UCM had met Biren and Ranjan earlier who had assured to bring a solution regarding their demand, he added.
RK Ranjan had assured to verify the border dispute issue by October 2021, but no positive steps have been taken yet, said Joychandra. He said the people are ready to launch intensified agitation if the government fails to make a positive statement in connection with the demand.
