Former Manipur chief minister O Ibobi on Wednesday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may bring an end to democracy by adopting dictatorship in the country if it continues to further extend its regime, “considering all the suppressive tactics played by the BJP.”

Ibobi was speaking at the observance of 138th Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress (INC) organised by the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Congress Bhawan, Imphal.

The BJP cannot tolerate criticisms which are actually constructive suggestions, said Ibobi, who is also the CLP leader.  He cited the arrest and arbitrary detention of various journalists, who criticised the BJP government, putting a big question on the Rights to Freedom of Speech and Expression.

Ibobi said the BJP government recently interfered with the judiciary but was fortunately struck down by the Supreme Court. “Such acts of the BJP have put democracy in peril,” he added.

“Meanwhile, it is unfortunate that the Prime Minister of the country has confined his duties only to criticising Rahul Gandhi who is now just an MP and no longer holds any executive position of the Congress Party,” Ibobi said.

The former CM said the Congress party is not familiar with such unnecessarily acts of criticising their rival parties. “However we will teach them a lesson in an appropriate forum if they continue to cross their limits,” he added.

Ibobi further pointed out that the public has not acknowledged a clear-cut picture of the differences between the Congress regime and the BJP regime.

“The day of judgment is near. It is believed that the public will deliver justice to democracy soon in the coming days,” he said.

MPCC president K Meghachandra in his speech termed the BJP a government which runs completely with vested interest. He contended that the programmes like ‘Go to Hills, Go to Village’ are just illusory spectacle to keep the public under their control.

“Where are the promises of generating 1.5 lakh employment per year? Where are the anti-corruption cells gone?” he questioned. It is a shame that the BJP is ridiculing and making a mockery of those who pointed out scams worth crores of rupees.

“The Congress will not remain as a silent spectator to all these activities and will go hand-in-hand with the public and save the state and country from the hands of the BJP,” he declared.

The MPCC president lastly announced that the MPCC will be launching a two- month 'Haath Se Haath Jodo Abhiyan' in districts and block levels on January 26, 2023 as part of the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ undertaken by Rahul Gandhi, to stay in touch will all the common people with dedication and commitment.

Hoisting of the INC flag by Megachandra, followed by Dhaja Geet and Rashtra Gaan by the women volunteers of MPCC marked the opening ceremony of the observance.

A two-minute silence was observed as a tribute to all the departed souls who gave their heart and soul for the Congress party, besides honouring the media persons of the state.

The function was also attended by CWC member Gaikhangam; former MPCC presidents TN Haokip; M Okendro and N Loken; and MLA O Surjakanta among others.
