The BJP has curtailed the fundamental rights of the people of the nation. They have no wish to strengthen or empower the people but they only wish to rule like the British, former Union Minister and All India Congress Committee in-charge of Manipur, Bhakta Charan Das said on Tuesday.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the 164th birth anniversary observation of Bir Tikendrajit held at Congress Bhavan, Imphal.

Charan also unveiled a statue of Bir Tikendrajit inside the complex of Congress Bhavan.

In his speech, Charan Das said that farmers in the country have been protesting for over a month but the BJP government has turned a blind eye to the farmers’ protests.

Commenting on the sacrifice made by Bir Tikendrajit, he said that it is not easy to get a hero like Tikendrajit in the present generation and said that a patriot like Tikendrajit should be honoured.

He recounted that Tikendrajit was hanged publicly by the British on August 13, 1891 in order to terrorise and demoralise the people.

“Congress party respects all freedom fighters from all over the country and many Congress leaders have also sacrificed to free India from the British,” he added.

State Congress Legislature Party leader Okram Ibobi said that the Congress government took the initiative of renaming the airport in Imphal to Bir Tikendrajit International Airport.

The then Congress government had approached the civil aviation minister to upgrade the Imphal Airport into an international airport but it was objected due to the area of the airport, he said.

Since the civil aviation minister demanded for additional land of minimum 500 acre so that the airport can be upgraded, the then government compensated the land owners near the airport after which the airport was upgraded, he added.

Member of Congress Working Committee, Gaikhangam said that the quality and courage of Bir Tikendrajit who fought against the mighty British should be possessed by people of the state.

President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, Govindas Konthoujam and other members of Congress party attended the function.
