The Charity Run for Manipur carried out by Chartered Accountant, Okram Bishwajit Singh, originally from Thoubal, presently residing in London has raised over Rs 2 lakh for the victims of Manipur conflict.
Bishwajit took part in the ‘Saucony 10K Run’, one of the favourite pastimes in London, held on July 14, wherein he raised over Rupees 2 lakh, stated a release on Friday. The charity run aimed to help people affected by ongoing conflict in the state, which resulted in over 221 deaths, thousands of injuries, and nearly 60,000 displaced people, it stated.
He reportedly approached friends and relatives to sponsor him whatever they could, it mentioned. It stated that the proceeds have been distributed with Rs 6,000 per head to 33 hapless widows and their families.
Bishwajit’s country-loving effort brought together a community of supporters to lend a helping hand in the present mayhem in Manipur, especially those who are still stranded in make-shift relief camps, it noted.
He also thanked his mother, Okram Jamuna Devi, his father Okram Premchand Singh and members of the World Meitei Council, for personally visiting the camps on August 18 and distributing the funds from this charity run, it stated.
It further mentioned that all the recipients extended their gratitude. One widow at Sajiwa Relief Camp, said ‘the money came at a time when I have lost everything I had. This handout will help me to start all over again and I will be able to look after my children’, it stated.
Another recipient from the same camp also expressed her gratitude and asserted that the support will help her start all over again and provide for my children, it noted. It added that various other recipients also returned with effusive thanks and gave their blessings.
Bishwajit’s Charity run for Manipur, marks a significant step in providing relief to those most affected by the crisis, demonstrating the profound impact that collective efforts can have on global humanitarian challenges, it said. The release further highlighted Bishwajit’s appreciation to everyone from Europe, America and India, who supported him in the charity run for Manipur.
