The All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) on Monday filed a criminal defamation case against a man and three media firms in connection with allegations of making wrong charges against AMBA.
The construction of a temporary shed in front of Cheirap court was allowed by Imphal Municipal Corporation, Municipal Commissioner on January 17, 2020, AMBA president Maibam Nilachandra said in a press meet held at AMBA office at Cheirap court complex in Imphal.
AMBA had urged former MAHUD minister Th Shyamkumar and the construction of a temporary shed in front of Cheirap court was allowed for maintaining the area and beautification, he said.
Almost 80 per cent of the construction has been completed and only the roofing is left, he said, adding that Uripok Apunba Kanba Lup, an organisation of Uripok area asked not to put the roof for some time.
Meanwhile, a representative of Uripok Kanba Lup namely Soram Tikendrajit attempted to defame the reputation of AMBA through the media by making false claims that AMBA has charged a sum of Rs 50,000 from each vendor to construct temporary sheds, he added.
AMBA has filed a criminal defamation case against Uripok Apunba Kanba Lup representative Tikendrajit and three media firms namely Impact TV- editor in chief, ISTV- president, programme producer, executive editor and Sanaleibak newspaper- proprietor, editor under section 500/501 IPC before Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West.
AMBA has also filed a damage suit of Rs 5,50,00,000 before the Civil Judge, Senior Division against them for damaging the reputation of AMBA.
A news report published on December 31, 2020, alleged AMBA of collecting Rs 50,000 each from street vendors and being ignorant of laws despite being a judicial body.
