Awareness programme on horticulture crop plantation

Chairperson of MSCST Thuigai Mathieu Rongmei said the main objective of conducting the awareness programme is to improve the economy of farmers who are settling in Noney by planting suitable horticulture crops.

A one-day awareness programme on horticulture production and its importance in hill areas was held on Tuesday at Tengkonjang Higher Secondary School, Longmai part III under Noney district.

The programme was organised by the Manipur State Commission for the Schedule Tribes (MSCST) in association with deputy commissioner and civil society organisations of Noney district.

Addressing the function, chairperson of MSCST Thuigai Mathieu Rongmei, said the main objective of conducting the awareness programme is to improve the economy of farmers who are settling in Noney by planting suitable horticulture crops.

He further said that MSCST came into effect on March 31, 2016 to ensure all scheduled tribes communities are facilitated with constitutional safeguards which include social, political, economic and educational background. The commission will continuously extend best effort for welfare of scheduled tribe communities of Manipur, he added.

"As a sound economy is the backbone of improving living conditions, the commission has conducted this awareness program. We will plan to organise such an awareness program in other hill areas too", he said while stating that plantation of horticulture crops in a more scientific manner is a good source of income in hill areas.

Agriculture Officer of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Roshan Dangmei, who had attended the function as resource person, explained various related schemes, policies and programmes for cultivation of horticulture crops such as Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture and Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region.

He said that plantation of suitable horticulture crops is the best source of livelihood for hill people as crops produced from hill areas are free from chemicals and people usually like it.

Farmers who attended the function shared their challenges endured in plantation of horticulture crops like infestation of crops particularly in tree bean, banana leaves. They urged the opening of a plant health clinic and installation of cold storage at the earliest.

The program was also attended by member of MSCST, Tara Manchin Hangzo; deputy commissioner of Noney, Joseph Pauline Kamson and member of MSCST Lungthaona Rongmei.
