Athuan Abonmai’s murder suspects remanded to police custody for 10 days

The two suspects who were arrested in Athuan Abonmai's murder admitted to involvement in various transactions with several “hill-based” armed organisations by raising huge amounts of public money through the NFSA rice distribution sub-contract for Tamenglong district.

The two suspects arrested earlier and remanded to a nine-day police custody on September 28 in connection with the murder of Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN) advisor Athuan Abonmai were further remanded to another 10 days till October 15 by the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Tamenglong on Wednesday.

The suspects, namely Ponthanlung Panmei and Lanchapou Bosco Gonmei were arrested by a team of commandos, Imphal West on September 27 and they were handed over to the Tamenglong police station.

According to the Tamenglong police station OC, an FIR was taken up under section 365/400/34 IPC and further on September 26, section 16, 17 and 20 UA (P) Act were added due to the prima facie evidence of involvement of armed “terrorists gang” in the crime, and the case was re-endorsed to the investigation officer for further investigation.

After completion of nine-day police custody, they were produced before the court on Wednesday with a further police custody prayer.

The police report stated that the investigation officer has been facing a time crunch for carrying out a detailed investigation during the nine-day police custody period. The accused persons were made to take the required Covid tests on September 29 while October 2 and 3 were general holidays due to Gandhi Jayanti and Sunday. October 4 was also declared Manipur bandh by JAC against the killing of Athuan Abonmai, leading to the time crunch, it stated.

Both suspects were produced before the special cell, Imphal West-SP, joint interrogation cell and during intense investigation, they admitted to involvement in various transactions with various “hill-based” armed organisations by raising huge amounts of public money through the NFSA rice distribution sub-contract for Tamenglong district, the report stated. Details of their transaction for the last six months have been sought from various national banks, it added.
