Athuan Abonmai Murder Case: Inquiry to be completed in three months

Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai and the Manipur government signed a memorandum of agreement on Wednesday.

After multiple rounds of talks between the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai and the Manipur government, both parties on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Agreement.

Following a meeting with the JAC on Wednesday in Imphal, Chief Minster N Biren Singh shared the points that were unanimously agreed upon, in a Facebook post.

CM Biren wrote: "It was agreed that an inquiry into the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Athuan Abonmai, and to fix responsibility thereof, will be conducted by an officer, not below the rank of an Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Manipur. As far as possible, the inquiry will be completed within three months. The inquiry will be independent of the investigation to be conducted by the NIA, and the findings thereof may be submitted to the NIA.

As per the agreement, it was acknowledged that t the case has been taken over by the NIA for investigation.

The eldest son of Abonmai will be appointed to the post of Sub Inspector of Police in the Manipur Police Department and an amount of Rs 10 Lakh will be paid a compensation to the next-of-kin of Athuan Abonmai.

The two parties also agreed that a suitable site will be identified by the Deputy Commissioner concerned in consultation with the JAC for establishing a graveyard of Athuan Abonmai, and where a memorial could be set up in his memory.

The JAC also agreed to suspend all forms of agitation and extend cooperation to the police and all investigating agencies to facilitat early completion of the investigation.

The JAC will take steps for receiving custody of the body of the Athuan Abonmai for conducting a funeral, with assistance from the Deputy Commissioner concerned.

Athuan Abonmai, former president of Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN), was abducted and killed by suspected National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) cadres on September 22 while at a function inTamenglong where a programme was held in connection with Chief Minister N Biren's visit to the district.
